For my artist wife, Ann (#52) and me (#53), Open Studios Art Tour is the main event of our art year. We host a fun time at Bonestell Studios, 10am-5pm, October 14-15 and 21-22, 2017. 2008 Ferrell, Los Osos, 93402, 805.528.4265, http://www.bonestellstudios.com/

I paint year-round. But fall is the season where we tidy up, organize our work and feel grateful when guests visit. While I paint on traditional canvas and paper, many of my pieces are created on unusual items I find walking around our Los Osos studio and at the beach, like used wood, rocks, shells, driftwood, and eucalyptus bark. My work primarily reflects a love of nature, with scenes of local views, flowers & precious wild birds.

In recent months, I expanded my “Magical Realism” series, too. Our studio has one quiet room devoted to these mystical works, with a wistful and parallel universe that is ‘in the world, but not of the world.’ These scenes are based on real places I’ve visited on daily walks with my dog, Wiley. The charmed figures spring from my imagination, intuition, and dreams.

When I begin a picture, I usually have no idea of who I’ll include in my painting--the scenes unfold as I progress. I want to convey a mood, a feeling. When you look at the paintings, what do you feel? Your own answer will interpret what’s happening, since my paintings ‘don’t have meaning outside of what can be felt by the heart.’

Guests also like to explore my diverse whimsical fine craft: rattles, spirit dolls, ceramic goddesses and wands made with found & organic objects. They seem surprised when they learn that I’m basically self-taught. I grew up in a family where creativity was like breathing. Both of my parents were artists. My two siblings and I have always followed a creative path. I have been painting for most of my life. We look forward to meeting you and sharing the magic of art in October!
